Sleep Deprivation. Does that sound like you?
I remember back in the day when everyone around me would tell me I slept too much. My mom was even worried that once I went to college I wouldn’t make it to some of my early classes because of my issues with getting out of the bed in the morning. Honestly sleep was a hobby for me and not because I didn’t get good sleep but because I had the most amazing dreams. I’m the type that would remember my dreams and some of the sagas would continue for weeks so I had to get to that place of deep rest so I could find out what happened next.
Getting to sleep, staying a sleep….it just wasn’t an issue for me. I could sleep through Thunderstorms, in the car, or
a plane, on a train, and unfortunately through my alarm. When I traveled people would tell me how they envied my ability to literally “fall out” when we were in motion.
Then in walked adult-hood and the older I got the less I slept. I figured it was good that I was sleeping less because I have to admit I probably was “sleeping my life away”. But I went from 10-12 hours to, I’m good if I get 4-5 hours of sleep.
The first time I noticed a problem was when I started to forget simple things like what day it was or I would get confused as to whether it was morning or night. Yes I keep my room dark like a cavern so it’s hard to tell when the sun is out but hat’s a story for another time. Then I started to notice excess weight gain and irritability. The irritability factor went to an all time high once I started working around other engineers full-time. But that too is a story for another day.
I tried different methods to help me get to sleep and stay a sleep but over the years the lack of sleep started to take its toll. I ballooned up and down for years and then the stress started to set in. I tell you anxiety is a beast and totally wreaks havoc on your health and everything else. I noticed an overall lack in energy both physically and mentally. I would try to make up for what I lost during the week, over the weekend so that meant staying in the bed all weekend long when I was supposed to be out with my daughter and/or doing household and outdoor chores.
Meditation helped some on getting to sleep but I’m still working on that. I’m not very good at quieting my mind. However, I do feel meditation, once I get it down, is going to be my go-to solution for many of my stress issues. I also use essential oils which helps but don’t always relax me or keep me asleep. They’re also hard to take on trips.
I used over the counter melatonin but I found that, depending on how bad of day I had sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn’t. I basically started to give up and decided that I would use what I could and when it worked great and if it didn’t I was going to have to be ok with not be fully rested the next day.
When I found out Le-vel was coming out with Rest in the form of sublingual gel technology (SGT), I must admit I was a little skeptical. I absolute loved their Lifestyle system but I wasn’t sure about this SGT thing. As soon as I could order, I got some and I have to say there was no looking back.
I took it on a pretty stressful night so I wasn’t expecting anything spectacular but I was pleasantly surprised. The first thing I noticed was the nostalgic taste. It reminded me of those orange push-ups pops, which I happened to love, that we got off the neighborhood ice-cream truck. Then I noticed how relaxed my body felt. I’m usually super tense, especially around my neck and shoulders. But once this SGT Rest kicked in. My body felt very “zen”. Within a few minutes, I laid down and I was out.
The next morning I woke up BEFORE my alarm went off and that is NOT me on days where I have a lot of stress. I also didn’t have the “I got hit by bus” feeling. My body was well rested and so was my mind. I loved the fact that I felt so refreshed. I have to definitely give Rest two thumbs up because it has put a whole different twist on getting quality sleep, especially on those days where life just really gets you going.
But here are some serious reasons to get your sleep under control.
- Memory loss
- Increased appetite
- Inflammation in the body
- Loss in creativity
- Interference with the ability to learn
- Potential decrease in life span
So it’s very important to find a way to get adequate sleep each night. My recommendation is to try many different methods like meditation, essential oils, but definitely look into adding Rest into your regiment. You’ll thank your lucky stars you did.
